Virginia Beach Residence Powers with Windspire

After waiting over 6 months for the final adoption of the local wind ordinance, a Virginia Beach homeowner installed his first Windspire in January 2010. The resident of this coastal community was excited to finally have the turbine making clean energy from the abundant wind resource in the area.

The noise-less wind system, that stands only 30 feet tall, fit easily within the guidelines of the new Wind Ordinance for the City of Virginia Beach. However, regulations did prevent the homeowner from installing 2 units side-by-side because his property is less than the required 1/3 of an acre. This guideline, while appropriate for propeller-style wind turbines that need to be taller, does limit the potential of a well placed Windspire installation.

Over 500 Windspire are installed across the US, including 2 units at a residence in Chesapeake, VA and several in North Carolina. NOAA - National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Plans 6 WINDSPIRE Vertical Wind Turbines for Juneau, Alaska

JUNEAU, ALASKA - Windspire was awarded a contract with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to provide the wind energy system for Ted Stevens Marine Research Institute – Alaska’s largest fisheries research facility. Six Windspire vertical-axis wind turbines will generate 7.2 kWh of clean, renewable energy at the research center in Juneau, Alaska.

The 66,000 square feet of office and laboratory space is the home of Auke Bay Laboratories, and employs up to 100 scientists working to expand the understanding of Alaska’s marine and fisheries resources. The Institute, which opened to public acclaim in May, 2007, was designed to achieve tremendous environmental efficiencies.
The solicitation from the staff at NOAA identified multiple requirements. The system was required to provide a clean, reliable and affordable source of renewable power for what some have called one of Alaska’s most environmentally-friendly federal buildings. The wind system also needed to withstand the sometimes brutal climate of Juneau, Alaska, demanding that it withstand “freezing spray, icing conditions, and over 36 inches of annual snowfall.” Finally, in a complex that houses nearly 100 of the agency’s top fisheries scientists, laboratories and fish and shark tanks, the system would have to be both quiet and visually attractive. The Windspire exceeds all of these requirements, with a noise level of just 6 decibels above ambient noise (essentially silent) and an appealing design that works perfectly with the building’s existing architecture.

Windspire Installation in Flat Rock, NC

WINDSPIRE VERTICAL WIND TURBINE

To Help Power Home in Flat Rock, NC

The first Windspire vertical wind turbine in the Asheville area will be placed at a residence in Flat Rock, NC, this Tuesday, September 22, 2009. Clean energy from the slender and silent wind turbine will immediately begin providing electricity to help power the Henderson County home.

This latest installation by Blue Sun Renewable Energy, headquartered in eastern NC, is one of four Windspires being put in place this coming month in North Carolina and Virginia. These four Windspires, made in the US by Mariah Power, will follow the manufacturer’s recent milestone of having 400 units installed around the country and abroad in just over two years. Mariah Power has also officially launched its European market, with representatives currently in France and Denmark.

Here in North Carolina, Blue Sun Renewable Energy has several Windspire wind turbines already in place, including a demonstrator unit at the NC Solar Center at NC State University in Raleigh and a unit at the project house of ABC’s Extreme Makeover: Home Edition in Jamesville.

Windspire is also now being recommended for other North Carolina sites, including a NC state park, coastal towns, universities and multi-unit installations at several government facilities. The flexible siting that allows Windspires to be placed in groups makes generating more power possible without tall towers or noise.
